This list is the result of three decades of criticism, thousands of hours of viewing, and a sustained attempt to answer that question honestly. We have not ranked films by their cultural weight alone. We have ranked them by the experience of watching — by the feeling of sitting in a darkened room and having the light change.

The films here range across a century of cinema, from the silent era to the streaming age, from Hollywood blockbusters to Iranian minimalism. We update this list every two years. Films enter and exit. Some classics have fallen as the cultural context that gave them meaning has shifted. Others have risen as time has revealed what their contemporaries missed. The current list reflects our best judgment as of 2026.

A note on methodology: we weight rewatchability heavily. A film that yields new meaning on a fifth viewing is, we believe, worth more than a film that exhausts itself on the first. We also weight formal ambition: a film that attempts something technically or narratively unprecedented and succeeds deserves more credit than a technically accomplished film that plays it safe.
