Best Horror Movies of All Time

Horror is the only genre whose primary goal is to make you afraid. When it works — when the darkness behind the door is the right darkness, when the score arrives at exactly the wrong moment, when the cut lands like a punch — there is nothing quite like it in cinema. When it fails, it fails loudly. This list celebrates the films that got it right.

We define horror broadly. The list includes supernatural horror, psychological horror, body horror, folk horror, cosmic horror, and films that resist easy categorisation but undeniably terrify. We have excluded films that use horror iconography while primarily belonging to other genres (action-horror hybrids, most superhero films with horror elements).

What unites these films is intentionality: every scare is earned, every moment of dread is constructed rather than accidental. The best horror directors — Carpenter, Kubrick, Ari Aster, Robert Eggers, Wes Craven — understand that fear is architectural. It is built in the editing room as much as on set.
